Call for Fulbright S-I-R Program Applications for the Hawaii Community College

The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program is an institutional application where U.S. higher education institutions may request recruitment of a scholar to teach undergraduate courses and assist with internationalizing their curriculum. More information on the program can be found here.

The Turkish Fulbright Commission is currently soliciting S-I-R applications from scholars in the fields of

  • Linguistics,
  • Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language and,
  • Teaching English as a Second Language,

to teach courses at the University of Hawaii, Hawaii Community College (UH-HCC) and to participate in a number of community events in the 2017-2018 academic year. Please read this memo that provides a summary of the teaching and extra activities the S-I-R would be engaged in at UH-HCC.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Turkish Republic citizenship and current residency in Turkey is required. U.S. citizens, Green Card holders and individuals who have applied for U.S. permanent residency are not eligible to apply.
  • Mimumum three years of university-level teaching and curriculum development experiences are required.
  • S-I-R candidates must be able to lecture fluently in English.
  • There is no upper age limit to apply.
  • Preference is given to individuals who have not previously been Fulbright grantees.
  • Applicants are excluded if they have had extensive and prolonged academic activities in the United States during the past five years.

Application Deadline: Applicants are required to prepare an “Application Package” and deliver or mail it to the Commission’s Ankara Head Office.

Hand-delivered Packages: The Application Package must be delivered by 17:00 on Monday, February 27, 2017 at the latest to our Commission’s Ankara Head Office.

Mail-delivered Packages: The Application Package must be shipped on February 27, 2017 and received by our Commission’s Ankara Head Office on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the latest. We recommend you to use a private carrier to ship your application package. Application packages that are received after March 1, 2017 will not be evaluated.

Materials Needed in the Application Package:

1) Completed online Fulbright Visiting Scholar Application Form

For number 3 of the preliminary questions, you should indicate “Scholar-in-Residence Program” as the program type. This will allow you to fill out a shortened version of the Fulbright application.

Once you save and continue, you are only required to fill out pages 1, 2 and 4 of the online application.

After submitting this application using the online system, a printout of the application must be added to the application package.

2) Resume/CV in English

You will upload this document online.

3) Passport bio-data pages for the scholar and any accompanying dependents

You will upload these documents online.

4) Two letters of references on behalf of the candidate

Applicants should provide two reference letters in English. These letters can be presented in two ways:

Electronic Reference Letter: Those who are asked to write an applicant reference letters can send the letter by filling in the reference letter form online via Embark application system. If the reference provider’s email address is registered into the system when the initial application form is completed, an Electronic Reference Letter form will be automatically sent to the indicated individual’s email.

Hand-delivered Reference Letter: The applicant may obtain the reference letter personally and send it with the application documents. Please download the reference letter form and utilize the format for the letter. Reference letters must be sealed and signed by the individual who has written the reference across the envelope’s seal.

5) Certified diploma copy

Please include a certified copy of your diploma for your latest degree completed, preferably in English.

6) Photocopy of the TOEFL or IELTS scores

Fluency in English is mandatory and should be demonstrated by a score of no less than 75 on the Internet Based TOEFL or a 6 overall score on the IELTS Academic. There is no year limit on the validity of the test score reports, however scores received before 2005 will not be accepted.

Individuals who have completed their education in the U.S. or U.K. and/or whom work as faculty members at universities where the medium of instruction is English are exempt from providing a test score.

You may select our Commission from the “IELTS Recognising Organisations” list to send your IELTS score.

7) Letter of leave from your home institution

A letter from your home institution stating that you will receive leave of absence if selected for the Fulbright grant.

8) Photograph

One current photograph with your name written on the back of the photograph must be provided.
