Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) Program
The Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) Program, an element of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, places U.S. students in positions as English Teaching Assistants within schools or universities overseas.
The goal of the ETA Program is to improve the English language abilities and knowledge of the United States in the assigned host countries meanwhile increasing the student’s own language skills and knowledge of the host country. These selected students may also pursue individual study and/or research projects in addition to their teaching responsibilities.
The ETA Program in Turkey is administered jointly by the Turkish Fulbright Commission and the Council of Higher Education and executed by participating universities. Grants are given for nine month periods (one academic year) and have the possibility of renewal for a second year. Grantees are placed in a variety of settings across Turkey, providing an opportunity for extended cultural immersion.
Grantees often devote their time outside the classroom toward improving their Turkish language skills. Some assist in research being conducted by their Turkish colleagues and others engage extracurricular through fine arts events and organizations on campus (such as choirs or film clubs) as well as by joining club or sports teams at their host universities. Many also establish or work to provide extracurricular opportunities for English language development for their students, including speaking clubs, book clubs, library resource drives, creative writing workshops and more.
